The Society for the Advancement of Breeding Research in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO) is an international society devoted to basic and applied aspects of breeding research in economically important plant species. The society was formed in 1968, when global food security was a major issue. In 2018, the society is still active as one of the few professional associations focusing on the Asian region. This
article reflects on 50 years of history with an emphasis on the official publication of the society called the SABRAO Journal of Breeding and Genetics, which was first published in 1969.
